Oh, What fun we had!
All the things that I have are just that -- things with no eternal value. But there are a few things I have that I enjoy in special ways. I have my Grandmother Caskey's hats, and Glen's Grandmother Bulloss' tea cups. And what fun it is to share these things with my friends!

Recipe for Self Rising Flour
Emergency Substitutions from Under the Arbor Cookbook
My friend, whose son and is serving with his family as a missionary in a remote area, requested a recipe for self rising flour. Self rising flour is sometimes hard to find in other countries. I found the recipe in my Under the Arbor cookbook, along with some other helpful substitutions.
Visit the Under the Arbor campground here. A lovely place. I had the privilege of visiting this special campground some time in the 90's with my Mom, and my Mom's friend, who has a "tent" in this special place. It was indeed a special day! And not very far from Charlotte.
Click here to read about a special place. The families who participate in camp meetings at this Methodist campground have published a cookbook, and I found this "emergency substitution" list in the cookbook.
if you don't have/use
1 cup self rising flour/1 cup all purpose flour, 1/2 tsp. salt, 1 tsp. baking powder
1 tablespoon cornstarch/2 tablespoons flour or 2 tsp. quick-cooking tapioca
1 tsp. baking powder/1/4 tsp. baking soda, 1/2 tsp. cream of tartar
1 cup powdered sugar/1 cup granulated sugar plus 1 tsp. cornstarch
1/2 cup brown sugar/2 tablespoons molasses in 1/2 cup granulated sugar
1 cup sour milk (buttermilk)/1 tablespoon lemon juice or vinegar plus milk to make one cup -- let stand five minutes
1 cup whole milk/use evaporated milk -- 1/2 cup evap. milk plus 1/2 cup water
3/4 cup cracker crumbs/1 cup bread crumbs
1 square (1 oz.) chocolate/3 or 4 tablespoons cocoa plus 1 tablespoon butter (or oil)
1 tablespoon fresh herbs/1 teaspoon dried herbs
1 small fresh onion/1 tablespoon instant minced onion, rehydrated
1 teaspoon dry mustard/1 tablespoon prepared mustard
1 cup tomato juice/use 1/2 cup tomato sauce plus 1/2 cup water
1 cup catsup or chili sauce/use 1 cup tomato sauce plus 1/2 cup sugar and 2 tablespoons vinegar (for use in cooking)
1 lb. dates/ use 1 1/2 cup dates, pitted and cut
3 medium bananas/1 cup mashed bananas
10 mini marshmallows/use 1 large marshmallow
I found this information in my Under the Arbor cookbook, copyright by Cookbooks by Morris Press, 1991. This is a collection of camp recipes prepared at camp meetings at the Pleasant Grove Methodist Campground in Mineral Springs, North Carolina.

Do you carry your god? Or does your God carry you?
To whom will you liken Me, that we should be alike?
They lavish gold out of the bag,
And with silver on the scales;
They hire a goldsmith, and he makes it a god;
They prostrate themselves, yes, they worship.
They bear it on the shoulder, they carry it
And set it in its place, and it stands;
From its place it shall not move. Though one cries out to it, yet it cannot answer
Nor save him out of his trouble. Isaiah 46:5-6
Even to your old age, I am He,
And even to gray hairs I will carry you!
I have made, and I will bear;
Even I will carry and will deliver you. Isaiah 46:4
Note from my study bible, The Nelson Study Bible, The pronoun they refers to the idol makers. They bear it: In contrast to the living God who carries and supports His people (see v. 4), idols have to be carried by those who worship them.
Our Lord spoke through the prophet Isaiah about idol worship. They hired goldsmiths to make a god, bowed down and worshiped, and bore their idols an their shoulders. They cried out to their gods, who could not hear or save them from their trouble.
Contrast to Psalm 34:6-7
This poor man cried out, and the Lord heard him,
And saved him out of all his troubles.
The angel of the Lord encamps all around those who fear Him,
And delivers them.
Again, from my study bible notes, "Poor man refers to the needy as well as the humble, whom the Lord delights to deliver. The phrase the angel of the Lord and the name of God are often interchanged. With the sense of God surrounding or hovering over the believer in this manner, there is no need to fear -- even in the most desperate times."
I am so thankful that the Lord my God heard me, saved me out of all my troubles, and delivered me!

Declaring the end, Calling the generations
We serve a great and mighty God. Our God declared the end from the beginning:
For I am God, and there is none like me, declaring the end from the beginning. Isaiah 47:9
Our God called the generations from the beginning:
Who has performed and done it, Calling the generations from the beginning? I, the LORD, am the first; and with the last I am He. Isaiah 41:4
Our God alone is wise:
Now Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied about these men also, saying, "Behold, the Lord comes with ten thousands of His saints, to execute judgment on all, to convict all who are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds, which they have committed in an ungodly way, and of all the harsh things which ungodly sinners have spoken against Him." . . . To God, our Saviour, Who alone is wise, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and forever. Amen. Jude 14-15, 25
In the words of Jesus,
And behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to give to every one according to his work. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End, the First and the Last." Revelation 22:12

Buffalo Chicken Salad
Tossed Salad
torn lettuce
combination of cut up cucumbers, onions, carrots, green peppers, etc.
Prepare tossed salad, just the way your family likes it. Tonight I am using iceberg lettuce, cucumber, onion, carrots and green pepper. Place in refrigerator until serving time.
Chicken Strips
2 pounds Boneless Chicken Tenders or Boneless Chicken Breasts, cut into strips
3/4 cup flour, plain or self rising
1 egg, beaten
1/3 cup milk
salt and pepper to taste
cooking oil
1/4 cup red hot sauce
1/4 cup butter
Wash chicken. Combine flour, salt and pepper. Combine egg and milk. Dip chicken first in flour mixture, then in egg and milk, then back in flour. Heat skillet. Add oil. Brown chicken strips in skillet, taking care to turn often for even browning. Cook strips until done in center, about 8 to 10 minutes. To prepare sauce, combine hot sauce with butter in another skillet. Add chicken. Cover, let simmer for a few minutes on low.
To serve, place salad on plates, top with chicken strips. Serve with Blue Cheese and Ranch salad dressings.

"Prayers Do Not Die"
I have just begun to read E. M. Bounds on Prayer. Take time to consider the author's opening in book one, Purpose in Prayer. I have often thought about the brevity of our lives, compared to the eternal value of our prayer. Bounds makes these statements with great eloquence.
E. M. Bounds on Prayer is a anthology of seven books on prayer. You can read the book online at Christian Ethereal Classics Library.
1 E. M. Bounds on Prayer, published in 1997 by Whitaker House, New Kensington, PA, p. 11
The prayers of God's saints are the capital stock in heaven by which Christ carries on His great work upon the earth. Great throes and mighty convulsions in the world have come about as angels move on more powerful, more rapid wings; and God's policy is shaped when the prayers of His people are more numerous and more efficient.
The most important lesson we can learn is how to pray. Indeed, we must pray so that our prayers take hold of God. The man who has done the most and the best praying is the most immortal, because prayers do not die. Perhaps the lips that uttered them are closed in death, or the heart that felt them may have ceased to beat, but the prayers live before God, and God's heart is set on them. Prayers outlive the lives of those who uttered them -- outlive a generation, outlive an age, outlive a world. 1

White as snow
All too soon,
The snow plows will come and clear the beautiful fluffy white snow off of the roads
But for now the neighborhood is at rest
Except for an occasional car that comes down the street.
I am thinking of
families gathered together in warm homes with porch lights burning
big bowls of popcorn
root beer and chili
playing games together
mittens by the fireside
pizza
hot chocolate for all the kids in the neighborhood
memories of walking our dogs in the snow
and my Daddy opening the drapes in my bedroom on a snow day when I was young
crocus bulbs and pansies soon blooming
and how our Lord, in his goodness, covers the dirty ground with a beautiful mantle of white, making everything clean and new.
Come now, and let us reason together," Says the Lord,
Though your sins are like scarlet,
They shall be as white as snow:
Though they are red like crimson,
They shall be as wool. Isaiah 1:18

Edy's Ice Cream on sale at Bloom
It's a good week to stock up on ice cream if you have a Bloom nearby.
Bloom is having a sale on Edy's ice cream. Here in Fredericksburg, VA, the prices are as follows:
If you buy one or two, $4.99 each, so $5 for one, $10 for 2
If you buy three, $3.99 each, so $12 for 3
If you buy four, $2.99 each, so $12 for 4 (same as 3)
If you buy five, $1.99 each, so $10 for 5 (same as 2!)
I'm going shopping for ice cream, and everyone gets to pick their own flavor!

The Sweetest Words to the Sweetest Song
My Daddy, playing Jesus Loves Me for family on Christmas Day
Jesus Loves Me
Jesus loves me this I know
For the Bible tells me so
Little ones to Him belong
They are weak, but He is strong.
Yes Jesus loves me,
Yes Jesus loves me,
Yes Jesus loves me,
The Bible tells me so.
Jesus loves me, He who died
Heaven's gate to open wide
He will wash away my sin
Let His little child come in
Yes Jesus loves me,
Yes Jesus loves me,
Yes Jesus loves me,
The Bible tells me so.
Jesus loves me He will stay
Close beside me all the way
He's prepared a home for me,
And someday His face I'll see.
Yes Jesus loves me,
Yes Jesus loves me,
Yes Jesus loves me,
The Bible tells me so.

Thank You for our Daily Bread
Nahiku Rain Jungle Boutique
We stopped here on "The Road to Hana" when we were in Maui. We enjoyed excellent banana bread with whole slices of banana and just the right amount of Maui sugar. The bread was well worth the $3 we left under the lava rock. You can see that we left one slice of bread in the box for another passerby. You can click on the breadbox to get a close up view. Can you tell my mouth is watering for banana bread from Maui?
